Matthew is a cultural anthropologist exploring how new media tools alter the way groups communicate, and, in turn, how those changes affect the evolution of said tools. Prior to joining the School of Print Media as a visiting professor, Matthew completed a Masters in the Social Sciences at the University of Chicago. Before that, he spent eight years in a variety of internet production and content strategy roles at Eastman Kodak’s kodak.com. Matthew did his undergraduate work at RIT, graduating in 1996 with a degree in New Media Publishing. He is currently conducting research on social computing (blogs, wikipedias) and citizen journalism. In the fall he will begin PhD studies at Cornell University’s Department of Anthropology.
Local connection to Jim Herget
Here are a few topics currently working on (or have just finished working on):
1. Bot and interactions with artificial intelligences
For the quick summary, please see my thesis abstract in the attached CV.
2. Mash-ups
I've been looking into the production of audio and video mash-ups. In particular I'm interested in the implications they have about social computing and how cultures view the "finality" (or lack there of) of media.
3. Blogging and Citizen Journalism
This research is just beginning and is currently in a pretty formative stage. I'm looking how publics come together, identify themselves, and attempt to do activism through a variety of online means.
4. Cross Media Publishing
Much of my work at RIT is focused on how emerging technologies (Data Driven Print, XML, Databases) can facilitate new forms of communication and outreach.
